Dr Philip Thomas

Dr Philip Thomas   Greetings to all my patients, friends and future patients.  I’d like to let you know a little about me.

I graduated with honors from Monash University Medical School in 1991, training in general surgery at the Alfred Hospital and Austin and Repatriation Medical Centres for five years before commencing Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash Medical Centre in 1997, obtaining  the specialist qualification MRANZCOG in 2000.  I then spent two years furthering my studies in England and Scotland, working in Taunton, Welwyn Garden City, Gloucester Royal Infirmary, Oxford, Whipps Cross and Farnborough.  In 2002, I also obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, one of only a few gynaecologists in Australia to have done so, and was elevated to Fellowship of the RANZCOG in 2003.

Upon return to Australia I undertook more training in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery at the Royal Women’s Hospital, working as staff specialist before entering private practice.  I now train other specialists and senior registrars in the same field, and I’m constantly involved in clinical research.

As a specialist and senior consultant, I’ve had appointments at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Monash Medical Centre,  Box Hill Hospital and Sandringham Hospitals,  and work in Leongatha two days per month in gynaecology and infertility.

One of my main roles now is to supervise and mentors specialists in training:  I’m Convener of the Victoria and Tasmania Registrars’ Surgical Skills Training Course and National Vice Chairman of the College’s Surgical Skills Committee, and undertaking a Masters in Reproductive Medicine.

I’m an honorary lecturer, University of Melbourne Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

My main areas of practice are now infertility, endometriosis and its surgical treatment, menstrual disorders and minimally invasive (“keyhole” or laparoscopic) surgery.  Robotic surgery is also on the ascendancy in my practice. It is my passion to ensure that you get the best surgical and gynaecological treatment, based on up to date techniques, latest technologies and evidence based practice.

I’m married, living in Bayside with two delightful daughters and a baby son. When not working (when is that?) my obsessions are fishing, four-wheel drive touring and my country retreat.  Maybe one day I’ll even put some grape vines in the ground…

Leanne   Dr Mihaela Diacon
MBBS, FANZCA

I am a specialist anaesthetist and have been involved in this field for over thirteen years in a variety of anaesthetic fields: general, ENT, vascular, orthopaedics, etc, but my greatest interest is in anaesthesia for obstetrics and gynaecology. I have been working with Dr Thomas over the past five years and have become familiar with his surgical procedures and therefore with his patient's needs regarding anesthesia.

My role as an anaesthetist is to assist you with any preanaesthetic health issue, to give you the anaesthetic for your procedure, to look after you during the entire procedure, and to monitor you postsurgery in your recovery period to make sure that you safely get over your surgical procedure. If you have any concerns or question about the anaesthetic part of your procedure you can contact me via Dr Thomas' room or via Canterbury Anaesthetic Services (CAS) on 98982744. Alternatively you can visit our CAS web site at: www.canterburyanaesthetics.com.au
